What is?
The alveolar protection device has the function of protecting the alveolus after tooth extraction, keeping the clot inside the alveolus, preventing bleeding after tooth extraction and avoiding contamination of the alveolus by food debris. The selection, planning and execution of the clinical case must be carried out by a properly trained dentist. They have several models and diameters that are shown in the table below. The alveolar protection devices are made of polycarbonate, an acrylic-based resin, biocompatible, non-degradable, and nowadays it is one of the most used alloplastic materials by surgeons for rehabilitation.
NOTE: The device must be packed and sterilized before use.

Sugical Technique
Suture after extraction
The proper technique for placing the alveolar protection device should be performed on the suture after extraction. The simple alveolar protection device must be positioned and fixed at the entrance of the alveolus after tooth extraction with the aid of the suture thread. In the model of alveolar protection device with bar, it must be fixed with the help of a suture thread and also fixed to adjacent teeth using a light-curing resin. The suture thread needle must pass through the mucosa (buccal, lingual or palate) and then pass through the hole of the protection device to later perform the surgical knot of the suture thread. The alveolar protection device must be stabilized with simple sutures or an X suture, passing through the holes of the device. This indication depends on the conditions that the patient presents, such as: amount of gingiva, fibromucosal thickness and gingival height.
The alveolar protection device for immediate implants
The alveolar protection device for immediate implants can be used together with immediate implant surgery after extraction and must be fixed with self-curing acrylic resin or light-curing resin through provisional connection for implants, to protect the extraction socket. Check the implant model and diameter in the patient’s file to select the temporary connection that will be used to fix the corresponding alveolar protection device. Do not exceed 10 N.cm of torque.
